My dear friends at the Wayward School are intimately invested in the fact that, “the fabric of community is created through the conscientious and capricious interlacing of our thoughts and activities.” Community is not observing performance, but discourse. Curiosity is vital. Generosity, key.
How then to move from presence to participation?
My wayward friends offer some suggestions:
- Cultivate concentration so that you can be where you are.
- Allow your wonder to be socially sated.
- Listen to wordless things; let them reverberate outward.
- Practice the exchange of ideas, not merely their broadcast or reception. Consider conversation that is beyond speech, composed of actions and doings. Consider conversation that is beyond the “real” world and pontificates about an ideal society.
- Be bravely unsure.
This is an ongoing endeavour. The list grows.
