It is my belief that the past must be kept alive, that there is no objective existence of what has come to pass, that it lives in us only by way of careful tending. And so it is easy to neglect the past. The active efforts required to maintain it often compete with the efforts required to wildly imagine futures whose seeds lay in this same moment.

This is one struggle of mine, to give adequate breath to historical precedent. Of this I have to constantly remind myself, and lately, it’s that same message, over and over again.
