I believe there is a use-value in strategically disregarding certain rules and conventions that are presented as being logical or manifest. In course language, to de-man these givens by making them irrelevant. An acknowledgment of a certain belief or reality does not have to then become the measure of all else. I am excited by the potential of putting ideas in relation to ideologies other than those that currently dominate, and excited by those constellations of ideas that are more nuanced than simple binaries. To be explicit, art movements do not always have to be put in relation to Western ways of art making or Western ways of thinking about art practices. What other ways can “non-Western” art be demarcated? I want to experience more of these art-historical narratives that recognize Western influence (if applicable) within a sea of a million other inspirations.
